CONQUEST OF JERUSALEM

AIM: To teach believers to avoid unnecessary boasting that can lead to destruction and downfall.

TEXT: 2Sam, 5:6-16; Dan. 4:19-33.

MEMORY VERSE:

"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall". Proverbs 16:18.

INTRODUCTION:

King Saul, David's predecessor, ruled Israel from Gibeah in Benjamin, but when David was crowned king by all Israel to rule them, he thought of having a new headquarter. His choice became the city on the hill know as Jerusalem; Salem, Zion, the city of D. virt and the holy city. The original occupants of that city then were the Jebusites. These Jebusites had faced temporal defeats from both Judah and Benjamin in the time of Joshua, but later reinforced to form a more formidable people in the midst of Benjamin and Judah to this day. Judges 1:8, 21, Josh. 15:63. It may be on account of their surviving these attacks that prompted them to boast against David's invasion of their territory (2Sam, 5:6). Their unnecessary boasting did not deter David from launching strategic attack on the city.

LESSON PRESENTATION:

1. CARELESS BOASTING OF THE JEBUSITES:
2Sam.5:6.

2. DAVID ATTACKS AND CONQUERS JERUSALEM: 2Sam. 5.7.10.

3. DAVID GETS ADDITIONAL FAVOUR: 25am 5:11-16

1. CARELESS BOASTING OF THE JEBUSITES:

25am 5:6.

The scriptures warns wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth, take heed lest he fall 1Cor. 10:12. It is foolishnese for one to undermine or underrate an opponent Overconfidence is not always good during crucial moments as faced by the Jebusites in Jerusalem Remember the scripture in Ps. 125:2. As the mountains surrounds Jerusalem. The mountains that surround Jerusalem practically makes it formidable to outside invasions (attacks). That Judah and Benjamin, even others attempted to displace the Jebusites and failed does not guarantee everlasting formidability. David came with Divine backing coordinated military strategy, wisdom and able bodied and committed solders and launched a surprised attack that gave him victory over Jerusalem. He later made it his capital and destroyed what remained of Jebus and their arrant boastings. They failed to recognize that David had a big God always behind his endeavours, who he also accords all the glory of his successes and achievements. With God, all things are possible Paul said by the Holy Spirit can do all things, through Christ which strengtheneth me Philip 4:13. Happy is anyone, whose God is the Lord, because, they that do know their God, shall be strong and do exploits Ps 146:5; Dan. 11.32b. Be careful with any man/woman who God is helping in life. Allow God to be on your side and victory is sure. Please, never start a battle you don't have ability to fight.

2. DAVID ATTACKS AND CONQUERS JERUSALEM

2Sam. 6,7-10.

Despite the unnecessary and careless boast of the Jebusite's thought to ward off David, David by Divine direction and support attacked Jerusalem with this able men and all ended in victory and praise. Your battles are about to end in victory and praise, He used the opportunity to silence Jebusites opposition for all time by destroying them, and used the city as his capital God will empower us to silence all spiritual, material, economic and financial oppositions that rise against us.

3. DAVID GETS ADDITIONAL FAVOUR:

2Sam 5:11-16 In Psalm 23,

David wrote that the Lord is his shepherd, he shall not want, that He, God, makes him to lie down in green pastures, leads him beside the still water Finally, he said, "surely, goodness and mercy shall follow him all the days of his life. The goodness and mercy include divine favour such as King Hiram of Tyre showed unto David- supplying all building materials and built a full house for David even without David asking for it God surprises His faithful with favour all round. The house gave David more comfort and peace and he took more wives/concubines and got more children. Whenever God is your life guide in any battle or endeavour, He. (God) knows how to make the impossible to become possible as well as give you reasons for celebration. Submit all your battles to Him today and see Him fight for you and give you victory, Cast your care on Him for He cares for you.

CONCLUSION:

Beware of unnecessary and careless boasting, it destroyed satan, Isaiah 14:10-15, Destroyed Nebuchadnezzar Dan 4:19-33, Edom boasted and was brought down, Obadiah 3 and finally, the boast of the Jebusites brought about the destruction of Jerusalem. Be careful and be informed.

TEST YOURSELF:

1. What brought about the destruction of Jerusalem?

2. Who are the Jebusites?

3. Why did David succeed, even when others failed?
